The window cleaners are there, in the middle of the street, with the bucket and the brush, earning a few pennies to survive. The scene repeats itself, and with it motorists annoyed by a gesture that they consider invasive. The problem, however, is not the brush, but the face that holds it: the face of a Rom, of a foreigner who, in the end, has never really been welcomed.

There are approximately 15,800 Roma and Sinti living in Italy, a small minority that, despite 80% of them being Italian citizens, continues to remain invisible and often hated. Housing policies, Roma camps, forced marginalization are only the symptoms of a refusal to integrate that has its roots in the centuries. But exclusion is not enough. Today, instead of welcoming, they are pointed at, isolated and ghettoized.

When the window cleaner approaches you, insists, looks you in the eye and asks you for a contribution, after all it is not just an annoying gesture. It is his only request for dignity, for existence, for a place that no one has ever wanted to give him. The reaction of Italians, however, is one of refusal, for what is perceived as “aggressiveness”, “insistence” or “lack of education”, which sometimes leads to real complaints.

So, while Italian policies, always incapable of addressing the problem with realism and foresight, continue to issue ordinances against window cleaners, the Italian people continue to ignore that Roma and Sinti have always been treated as a problem to be eliminated, never as an opportunity for encounter. The truth is that the lack of tolerance towards the window cleaner does not derive from his profession but from his origin. The window cleaner is a figure to be rejected, not because he is “dirty” or “unwanted”, but because he is Roma. And if he were Italian, perhaps he would pass us by in silence, perhaps he would be “just a poor man trying to survive”. The question we should ask ourselves is simple: is our society really ready to welcome or will it continue to reject those who, for centuries, have lived as outcasts?

VULAVA: a lamp that illuminates the shadows of our society.
